Spend Overview

Spend Overview is the page to open first thing in the morning, or right before a customer review. It answers four questions for whatever scope you pick: is spend on track, what moved, what looks unusual, and which service you should look at next.

It is part of the free tier. Every number on it comes from your delivered FOCUS billing lines, and every number links to the rows behind it in Cost Explorer.

Getting there

Pick Overview in the main navigation, right under Command Center. MSP partners get the same page inside each customer at Spend Overview under an AWS account, which opens it already scoped to that account.

Old bookmarks still work. Links to a per-account overview or to Spend Scope land here with the account already selected.

Choosing a scope

The scope bar under the page title sets three things:

  • AWS accounts. Leave it empty for every account you can see. Picking a management account includes the member accounts its billing export carries, and nothing is counted twice.
  • Dates. Start and through dates in UTC. With no dates you get the month so far.
  • Cost basis. Billed (what the invoice says), effective (commitments spread over the time they cover), list (public price) or contracted.

Press Apply scope. The scope lives in the address bar, so you can bookmark it or paste the link to a colleague and they will see the same view.

Is the data ready?

Right under the scope bar is the evidence strip. It says whether the billing export is current, waiting for its first delivery, partial or failing, and the date the data is observed through. A chip at the top right says whether the period has been reconciled against the AWS invoice.

If something is missing the page tells you instead of guessing. With no connected account you get a prompt to connect one. While the first export is on its way you get a pointer to Data Health. When only some sources have delivered, a banner names the gap and the totals should be read as a floor.

The summary band

Six tiles across the top:

  • Spend this period, with the change against the same number of days just before it. When there was no spend in that earlier window it says so rather than showing a percentage.
  • Period progress, how many days of the range have elapsed.
  • Projected period total, with its low and high range, the forecasting method and how much history it used. Projections only exist while you are looking inside the current month on billed or effective cost. Otherwise the tile says why there is no projection.
  • Credits and refunds for the period.
  • Tax for the period.
  • Commitment covered, the spend your Savings Plans and Reserved Instances paid for, with the unused part in the footnote. This one is always on effective cost.

Amounts in different currencies are listed side by side. SpendShrink never adds them together.

Spend by service

A stacked chart of the eight largest services plus everything else, bucketed by day, week or month depending on how long the range is. Switch to 12 months to see the longer trend. Click a service in the legend to hide it.

Beside it, Top services lists each service this period, the prior period and the change. Every row has an Open in Explorer link that opens Cost Explorer with the same accounts, dates and cost basis and that one service selected.

Anomalies

Each day a service spends far more than its usual level over the previous four weeks, it shows up here. The strip shows how many anomalies fell on each day of the range and the table lists them with the spend that day, the usual spend and how far it strayed. Anomalies are scored on billed and effective cost only, so on list or contracted cost the section explains that instead of showing an empty list.

Charge categories and regions

Two tables with the same current, prior and change columns: one by charge category (usage, purchases, credits, tax and so on) and one by region. Each row opens the matching rows in Explorer.

Service groups

Seven cards group services the way most teams think about a bill: compute, databases, storage, containers, network, analytics and AI, and everything else. Each card shows the group total and change, its largest services, and inventory counts such as EC2 instances or NAT gateways with when they were last observed. A count you have not collected shows as not inventoried, never as zero.

Members opens a drawer with every service in the group, and Open in Explorer filters Cost Explorer to exactly those services.

Exporting

Every table has a Columns picker that remembers your choice, a density toggle, and an Export menu that downloads the rows you are looking at as CSV or prints the page.
